Årets Leksak - Parents' Magazine

Parents' Magazine, en amerikanskt tidning för föräldrar från barn från 0-8, har valt ut 54 av årets bästa leksaker. Och tre av våra leksaker var med!

Flutter 'n Fun (Infantino) var en av leksakerna utvalt för bebisar. Med färgglada vingar och plats för egna bilder, fjärilen är säkert att fånga barnets intresse.

Snuggle Pods (Manhattan Toy) var också utvalt i "Baby" kategorin. Dockan har eget "sovsäck" och är otroligt mjuk och söt.

My First Mosaic (Alex Toys) var utvalt it "Preschooler" kategorin - en bra leksak för barn som älskar klistermärken.

Det fanns också vissa nyheter från våra leverantör - Alex Toys, Melissa & Doug, Manhattan Toy, Taggies och Lamaze - som vi har inte hunnit få in än. Roligt!

Murphy's Law...

Oj vad det är svårt att hantera lagret! Det verkar som om precis när vi har lagt en beställning från en leverantör (eller har precis fått en leverans), en produkt som har inte såld så bra plötsligt säljer slut. Så är det...

Vilka snälla kunder vi har!

Vi har precis haft höstlov, och den här gången hade både jag och Karin planerat semester. Vi klarade av hela sommaren utan att stänga, men nu, i slutet av oktober, kunde vi inte leverera beställningar under en vecka. Vi satt meddelandet på framsidan och jag skrev till alla som hade beställt, och fick bara en avbeställning under hela veckan. Mest fick jag svar som "trevligt semester med barnen" och "visst ska ni ha semseter - ha det så roligt". Vilken lättnad - och tack till Er!

(Och ja - vi hade det jätte bra med våra familjer (Karin i solen och jag i fjällen) och det var bra att komma tillbaka till November laddade och redo att förbereda julen.)

Nu rullar allting som vanligt igen, och vi har kommit ikapp med beställningarna. Hoppas att ni har också haft det trevligt under höstlov och Halloween!

Nya byggleksaker från Mic-o-Mic

Titta på dessa fina byggleksaker från Mic-o-Mic - någonting som man kan bygga och sen leka med. Vi såg dem på leksaksmässan i Tyskland, och tänkte ta in dem... och äntligen har vi första fordon.

Idéen är att man börjar med att lägga ut alla bitar, sen följer man (eller barnet!) instruktioner i bilder (altså ingen text att läsa eller översätta). Man får ett verktyg att förenkla byggandet, och för att ta isär bitarna sen om man vill bygga om den igen.

Jag ska säkert ta ett par stycken med på höstlöv - om det regnar, då är vi förbered!

FRAKT REA!

Vi har sänkt våra fraktkostnader under oktober månaden. Vi brukar ta från 20 upp till max 80 kr inom Sverige, beroende på vikt och storlek. Men under oktober tar vi bara 49 kr, oavsett hur mycket du handlar. Passa på och julhandla tidigt!

Veckans vara - magnetiska dockor

Nu är det dags för veckans vara igen... faktiskt är vi lite sen att byta ut den. Men nu har vi våra populara magnetiska dockor från Melissa & Doug på rea - bara 119 kr i stället för 159 kr.

Jag tycker bäst om Maggie Leigh - hon har roliga kläder, och hon stavar sitt namn "rätt"!

Can Amazon Be the Wal-Mart of the Web?

När jag startade ABC Leksaker 4 år sen var det aldrig med drömmen av att vara nästa Amazon... Faktiskt tycker jag om att vi är fortfarande ett litet företag, ingen jätte i nätvärlden. Men man kan förstås lära sig från de bästa.

Förra veckan, när jag packade artiklar, råkade jag ut att skicka fel produkt till kunden. Sånt händer ibland (och nu att jag är över 40, behöver jag ha glasögon på mig!) men förhoppningsvis inte ofta. Tänk om vi inte hade relaterade produkter brevid varandra, utom utspridda över hela lagret... Javisst skulle vi säkert inte skicka fel produkt, men då skulle vi aldrig hitta någonting! Men det är kul att se hur andra gör det.

Leveranser och leveranser...

Nu verkar det som om leveranser trillar in varje dag. Igår fick vi leverans från 5 olika leverantör. Förra veckan var det två pall... Vi försöker att lägga ut allt vi kan så snart som möjligt - kolla under Nyheter för att se några av våra nya produkter. Här är ett urval av vad som vi har fått in under de sista 5 dagarna -

Såg precis denna artikeln - tyckte att det var roligt! Jag kan själv erkänna att jag har kört rund i bilen med barnen, satt på torktumulare, dammsugat och körde (små) rundtur i sovrummet med barnvagnen... men jag hade tur att mina barn sov bra för det mesta. Och välling hjälpte oss överleva jetlag - vi hade mängder i väskor på varje resa till USA.

El uppdatering

Så efter 24 timmar utan el, vi nu har eget kontrakt med el-bolaget. Jag var här när killen kom för att sätta elen på igen, och han hade massor med frågor att jag kunde svara på som...

• Varför står det plan 2 och 3 när el ska bara till plan 2? (ingen åning, men tydligen skulle någon ha klagat om de inte hade el i 24 timmar...)
• Varför har du en 63 ampere säkring, när det säkert inte behövs? (Jag - "Säkring? Vad?")
• Hur är värmen - el eller? (ingen åning - men det fungerar i alla fall)

Att vara egetföretagare är alltid intressant, och man lär sig så mycket - även om idag har jag bara lärt mig vad som jag inte vet.

Stora Rubens Barn

Vi älskar våra Rubens Barn dockor - så fina och kramgoa! Och idag fick vi stora syskon till dem, Rubens Original. Storlekar är:

• Våra nya Rubens Original dockor är 50 cm
• Lilla Rubens dockor är 40 cm*
• Rubens Cosmos dockor är 38 cm*
• Rubens Ark dockor är 36 cm
• Rubens Linné dockor är 22 cm.

Nu har vi dockor som passar alla!

Oväntade händelser...

Det är alltid roligt att vara ganska nystartade (snart 4 år nu) och att vara litet. Men ibland går det lite snett... Två år sen, när källaren hemma blev för liten, hittade vi en bra lokal - nära och precis rätt storlek - perfekt! Vi hyrde den som andrahandskontrakt från ett annat företag. Men nu har detta företag gått i konkurs, och el-räkningar har inte betalats. Vi har inte eget kontrakt med el-bolaget, som blev ganska tydligt när el stängdes av idag, kl 11. Det är faktiskt ganska svårt att göra någonting i ett internet-företag utan datorer, skrivare, telefon, internet, belysning, osv. Tur hade vi packat alla beställningar, så det var bara att lämna in dem hos Posten och jobba hemifrån. Och förhoppningsvis har vi - från och med kl 16.37 idag - vårt eget kontrakt med el-bolaget, så strömmen ska vara på imorgon... någon gång under dagen...

Även om det är ganska frustrerande ibland, är lite som att växa. Först bodde vi hemma, sen på ett provisoriskt lokal, och nu måste vi hitta eget "hus" att bo i. På Engelska kallas det för "growing pains". Har någon lite Alvedon?

Det är för tidigt...

... att tänka på julen! Men vi fick en jätteleverans från Oskar & Ellen igår, och med leveransen kom våra första julprodukter - luciakronan, tomteverkstad, julkrubba, adventskalendar - och nya julfigurer till sångpåsen! Kolla under nyheter och börja planera...

Veckans Vara - Cubio Kulbanor

Vi har flera roliga kulbanor - Frigits till kylskåp, Quadrilla för lite större barn (och föräldrar!) och två fina från NIC, ett tysk tillverkare. Nu har vi 25% rabatt på NIC kulbanor och klossar.

MultiRace är en roligt "fram och tillbaks" bana som är perfekt för de minsta barnen, men också för större. Den kommer med bollar, gubbar och en stor cirkel som rullar ner, och då kan barnen se hur olika grejer rullar på olika hastighet. ("Moment of inertia" om jag kommer ihåg från någon kurs...)

Och Cubio är en fantastisk kulbana för mindre barn. Bollarna är stora - inga kulor som passar i munnen på denna, och kulbanan är godkänt för barn från 18 månader.

Cubio klossar är också med i Veckans Vara - de har små bitar i plast som håller byggnaden ihop, så att det är enklare för små händer att bygga roliga grejer.

Formex Höst 2009

Nu känns det som om sommar har riktigt tagit slut. Vi var på Formex igår för att titta på alla nyheter på den svenska marknaden, och för att börja förbereda oss till julen. Det känns tidigt att se alla fina julpapper och kort...

Det var spännande, och som vanligt, hittade vi massor med roliga produkter som kommer in säkert under hösten. Det är nu dags för oss att beställa och lägga allting ut på hemsidan.

Men det var också lite besvikande. Vi sträver efter att ha unika produkter, och tycker att det är roligt att hitta på något nytt varumärke som inte finns här i Sverige. Vi har importerat flera produkter från olika länder, bl a USA (förstås), Tyskland, Schweiz - vi vill inte att ABC Leksaker ska se ut precis som alla andra leksaksbutiker, och det är så roligt att hitta bra produkter från en liten tillverkare utomlands. Men nu på Formex hittade två av våra "exklusiva" varumärke hos en annan leverantör. Det blir enklare för oss att köpa nu, men då ska vi inte vara lika unik som vi var... C'est la vie!

Inlärning eller lek?

Hittade en intressant artikel på nätet angående inlärning och lek, som visar också skillnader mellan USA och Sverige. Skolan börjar mycket senare här, och förvantningar i förskoleklassen är ganska enkla.

Det är svårt att vara föräldrar och veta vad är det som är bäst för barnet. Ska barnet ha det enkelt på skolan, eller är det bättre med mer lek? Och så mycket berör på barnet...

Semester dagar?

Första veckan tillbaka från USA gick det riktigt bra. Jag vaknade kl 5 eller 6 varje morgon för att skicka iväg beställningar innan barnen vaknade, och då var vi på simbassängen varje eftermiddag. Att kunna jobba bara några timmar, och att kunna fylla på lite rund kanterna är ett dröm, men det kan inte överleva i evigheter. Idag började det spricka lite...

6.00 - steg up

6.45 - på kontoret, började att packa beställningar, David hemma med barnen

8.30 - tog över från David, han på jobbet, B till fritids, A sover, C med till jobbet

10.00 - sprang ut med C för logoped besök (och det är klart att han behöver extra stöd nu i skolan - att vara tvåspråkigt är inte alltid en fördel)

12.15 - C och jag hämtade A och As bästa kompis, lunch på Mörby centrum (för att det finns ingen mat i huset)

1.00 - tillbaka på jobbet för att slutföra beställningarna, tre barn med

1.30 - beställningarna i bilen, flickorna på stallet för att klappa hästerna

1.35 - 5 minuter sent för Cs tid hos frisör

2.05 - hämtade flickor, lämnade post, satt lite bensin i bilen och körde in till stan (David hade varit på Tekniska museet igår med 5 barn, och råkade lämna en tröja där, som måste hämtas)

2.55 - hem igen, lämnade C plus flickorna framför Nickelodeon (min elektroniska barnvakt)

3.15 - hämtar B, kör förbi kontoret för att hämta datorn, Cs simkläder som han lämnade där tidigare, ett paket för en kund som vill hämta hemma hos oss på kvällen, pratar med min man

3.20 - hemma igen för att hämta frusna ärtor för B som landade på golvet på näsan, något ledsen. Märker att datorn är inte med, panik. Kör till kontoret igen, ingen dator utanför. Kör hem igen, ingen dator. Kör till kontoret igen. Letar igenom hela kontoret, hittar den precis var jag lämnade den när min man ringde.

4.00 - hem igen, 4 barn nöjda framför Nickelodeon, tack och lov. Datorn hemma, tack och lov.

4.15 - alla i bilen igen, på väg till frisören med A och bästa kompis, B och C. Flickorna har konstiga idéer över hur håret skulle se ut. Försöka att vara hjälpsam utan att vara kritiskt, men kan inte se hur det här ska lyckas.

4.45 - Lämnar flickorna på frisören, med godkänt plan om håret, kör med C till simskola, bara 200 m bort. Ingen där. Ringer till huvudbadet, inget svar. Kör dit istället.

5.00 - Kommer in till huvudbassängen, vill veta varför ingen är där på den lilla bassängen. Har fel stället. Spring till bilen, tar ut C med simkläder. Byter i rekord tid.

5.02 - Simskolan böjrar. Spring ut med B för att hämta flickorna. Lämnar 3 hemma framför tv:n igen, hämtar C.

5.45 - alla hemma igen. Helt slut. Dags att laga middag...

Flexibilitet - ja, men lugn och ro? Det blir enklare när skolan börjar (på onsdag), och vad jag längtar efter att ha en hel dag på kontoret! Men det tar säkert bara ett par veckor innan jag längtar efter semesterdagar igen...

Tillbaka igen...

Nu har vi haft det riktigt bra i USA - har sett familjen, har varit mycket i solen, har varit på ett antal läger - ja, allt bara bra. Vi har överlevt "jet-lag" två gånger, och det blir enklare varje år nu att barnen är större.

Och vi har även fått en ny kusin, liten Josiah Hubert (Jed) som föddes den 2 juli. Det var roligt att vi kunde vara med, och att barnen fick träffa deras nyaste kusin.

Det var lite svårt att bestämma precis vad som Jed skulle få från oss... ABC Leksaker har så många roliga babyleksaker, och var och en har jag valt ut för att jag tyckte om den. Så vad skulle jag ta med till USA för min brors första barn, särskilt när jag inte visste vad den skulle vara, pojke eller flicka? Taggies var ett klart val, någonting som bebisen kunde använda på en gång. Grodan "Rabbit" följde också med - han passade med inredningen i rummet - grön och gul. Min svägerska tycker om musik, så det blev vattenflöjter (men det tar ett par år innan Jed är redo, även om svägerskan ville prova dem på en gång). Och "In the Pocket Baby" - en bra produkt med svenskt design som hon inte skulle få någonstans annat i USA. Allt annat får vänta ett par månader...

Karin har hållit allting på ABC Leksaker igång under juli-månaden, och nu är hon på semester så jag får klara allt själv... Vi ska se hur det går!

Leksaker och säkerhet

"Vi gör det för barnen..."

Det är bra att leksbranchen har kvalitetsundersökningar, och det är särskilt bra att det finns så mycket fokus på leksaker för barn under tre år. CE inom Europa och ASTM i USA har funnits länge, och fungerar att hålla leksaksbranchen i ordning. De har nästan samma mål, och nästan samma standard med fokus på leksakens innehåll, tillverkning, storlek, färliga ämnen och brännbarhet.

Ja, ibland finns det problem, som två år sen när flera leksaker återkallades för bly i färg. Och ibland har problem identifierats senare, som magneter i leksakerna. Men ingenting kan ersätta engagerade föräldrar som har koll på vad som barnet leker med... och äter.

Men nu, som svar till kvalitetsproblem två år sen, har USA fått en ny lag - The Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act, som har nu kommit igång. Nu måste alla produkter avsedd för barn mellan 0 och 12 genomgå tester för bly - även strumpor, böcker och skor. Ja - om man äter böcker, skor eller cyklar kan man kanske (kanske...) få i sig lite bly. Men är det så möjligt? Och andra produkter som inte innehåller bly - som strumpor, kläder, osv. - ska också tvingas att genomgå samma tester för att visa att det finns inte. Och vad ska de nya testerna kostar? Några produkter som påverkats eller kanske tas från marknaden:

• Böcker som tryckts innan 1985 (om man slickar sidorna är det ok, men om man äter upp hela boken...)
• Skor (som kanske har bly i sulen, men om man slickar eller äter upp sulen är det rätt äkligt, även om man inte får bly i sig...)
• Barncyklar (som ska - i många fall - bara försvinner från marknaden för att vissa delar innehåller bly... och om man äter cykeln...)
• Geologi-set för skolor (barnen kan titta på en bild i stället - det är alldeles för farligt för en 12-åring att ha riktiga stenar i klassrummet)
• Andra-hand - alla leksaker och kläder som säljs i andra hand, genom Salvation Army (~ Myorona) och e-bay för att produkterna kan inte testas.

Jag vill inte minska värden av bra standard, men den här verkar vara "over the top" - även för USA. Många av de mindre tillverkaren har inte råd att göra alla tester, och många leksakstillverkare och leksaksaffärer har redan stängt / slutat.

Det blir intressant att se hur det här påverkar leksaksbranchen, och också barnkläder, barnskor, mm. Kanske blir det bara stora tillverkare kvar... synd...

Vårstädning på gång

Produktsortiment håller på att utvecklas hela tiden, och vi har lagt upp olika kategorier lite då och då... Men nu har vi börjat kolla närmare för att se om det är rimligt.

Barnrumsinredning är en ny produktgrupp för oss. Vi började ta in flera och flera grejer förra året, och det har tagit lite tid för allting att hitta rätt ställe. När jag tittade på kategorin hade vi minst 16 olika underkategori - alldeles för många! När funderade på saken, ska man egentligen ha grejer på väggen, på sängen eller på golvet, plus belysning och förvaring... och saccosäck, förstås! Nu har vi 6 kategori, plus "övrigt", så det känns mycket bättre och enklare.

Och nu vidare till leksakerna...

RoomMates - Avtagbara klisterdekaler i bruk!

Det är alltid bra att prova på olika produkter, och se hur de fungerar i verkligheten. Vi har RoomMates hemma - flera olika för mina tre barn. Det är kul att barnen kan få välja själv - Christopher har djungel-tema, Benjamin har dinosaurier, och Annika har en blandat undervatten-häst tema. Och i källaren har vi sports-tema.

Funkar dem? Sitter dem fast? Ja - det kan jag säga. Annikas sitter på målad vägg - vi tog bort dem för att måla om hennes rum och satt dem på igen utan problem. I pojkarnas rum (djungel-dino) sitter dem på tapet... men här kommer lite varningstext. När jag satt dekalerna på var det enkelt att ta bort dem och flytta dem rund tills att de var hur vi ville ha dem. Men nu, efter flera månader, sitter dem riktigt fast på tapet och det går inte att ta av. I källaren har vi väv, och där sitter dem fast också. (Andra dekaler som vi har provat på konteret sitter inte fast på väv.)


Så ha det roligt med RoomMates - men akta på tapet. Det är alltid bäst att kolla först.

Att skriva på svenska...

Nu ska jag försöka att skriva i min blogg på svenska... lite annorlunda för mig, och lite sämre gramatiken... men vi ska se hur det går!

We're Movin' Up in the World!

Yes, ABC Leksaker is slowly growing - now nearly 3 years old! In child-terms, I guess we are walking and talking, but still in relatively simple sentences. In company terms, it means that the days of stand-alone computers are nearing an end... and that I no longer have time to do it all. We will now have a part-time accountant to help with the bookkeeping, which means a new computer, a semi-networked office - and best of all - a networked printer. Up until now, Karin and I have been sharing the printer in a "tennis shoe network" - the kind where you unplug the cable from one computer, walk it over to the other computer, and plug it in. Until now, file sharing has meant handing USB memory sticks back and forth. But now, we feel really grown up!

Yes, it seems as though our discount codes can live forever on the internet. Way back when, in September of 2006, we had a discount code for a 10-day period for the faithful readers of our newsletter. I don't know how it happens, but now, nearly 3 years later, we still get the occasional customer who tries to order using that code... and can't understand why it doesn't work...

Hörselskydd - A Test Case

Seems as though Benjamin has a hard time concentrating at school... probably not so unusual for 7-year-old boys. These Peltor Kid hörselskydd are marketed for rock concerts (with pictures of Gwyneth's little Apple wearing them), fireworks and other loud activities. However, we thought they might come in useful in keeping outside distractions to a minimum during homework time and while doing school work. 

We started last night after dinner, when we sat down work on his math. He immediately put on the hörselskydd, but instead of doing any work, he set about trying how different things sounded with them on - banging on them, banging on the table, hitting a fork on a plate, yelling, and so on. So for a few minutes, we all wished we had hörselskydd as well! But then he finally focused on his work, and seemed to enjoy wearing them. 

This morning, he woke up before 5, and we rolled over with a muffled "go back to bed - it's too early". When we went in to wake him up for school, there he was, sound asleep, wearing the hörselskydd again! He had them on the whole way to school in the car, and proudly carried them in to his desk.

So the verdict? Clearly they are comfortable to wear (and sleep in!), and they fit a 7-year-old easily. I even tried them, and they just about worked for me. As for helping him concentrate in school... he gave them a glowing review this afternoon when I picked him up... but we will wait and see what the teacher says.

Trying a New Browser

Being a web-based business keeps me on the edge, or so I like to think. I read an article recently (in a good old-fashioned paper newspaper) about the different browsers available - Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome, so I'm trying them out. It is hard to switch, so I decided to give each one a whole day so that I could really evaluate them well. Old habits die hard, so I figured I needed to break my old habits in order to really see what was possible. That was my plan, in any case. i'm afraid I only made it through 2 hours with Firefox before I decided it was time to try something else, and I was wondering if I would find some feature to tip the scales away from my old standby, IE. 

But surprisingly, I did find something. Google's Chrome is my new favorite, and I have now switched. Chrometakes away a lot of the unnecessary buttons, and gives a crisp, clean interface. It also has only one field for either internet addresses or google searches - which streamlines the process of getting to the page you want. 

I thought I would check on you all - the visitors to ABC Leksaker - to see where you fall. 74% of you use Internet Explorer, not surprising. 17% are using Firefox, 4% are using Safari, and less than 1% are using Chrome. And a few of you are using a host of other browsers that I've never even heard of - Opera, Mozilla, Netfront, Camino, SeaMonkey - maybe I wasn't as "on the edge of technology" as I thought. 

In any case, it is fun to try something new - you might find something you like!

New Article Preaches Value of Play

A new article in the New York Times promotes the value of play over academics, especially in the early school years - something Sweden seems to already know. So, while we Americans are tempted to cram knowledge and learning into our children, it seems as though good play will do the trick. (This is especially reassuring for me, since my nearly 8-year-old can't yeat read!) Anyway, it makes an interesting read, and promotes the values we believe in at ABC Leksaker - namely that children grow through playing, especially imaginative play. Read the actual article here:

We are participating in a contest on BarnNet - we will be giving away one Radio flyer trehjuling to a lucky winner, plus four Bilibo to the next four winners.

But it was interesting... I got the first draft of the contest last week, and the last question had me stumped. "Please help ABC Leksaker find a new slogan. Fill in your best idea here." I had no idea we were looking for a new slogan - in fact, we're quite happy with "ABC Leksaker - Kreativa leksaker för lekfulla barn", so I asked them. And you know - there's a reason for everything. Apparently, the lucky winner can get stuck for income taxes on the value of the winnings... UNLESS they do something creative that helps the company, like writing a new slogan, or motivating why just they should win. Karin was also surprised, but mentioned that all other contests now make sense. 

Anyway, since we don't really need a new slogan, all you have to do to enter the contest is to "motivate" why just you should win, in 15 words or less. (Think of it as a mini-tweet, for those of you who have been hearing altogether too much about Twitter!)

You can find the contest BarnNet on: www.barnnet.se - it's a great site that lists products by type and manufacturer, not just by name or product number. It is a different take on the web market, and one that is needed and appreciated.

"You gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em..." yep, a great Kenny Rogers song, and a good one to listen to while playing Duck, Duck, Bruce! It's not poker, but you are still betting on the next card, and hoping that flipping that one over will add to your collection.




There's no dealing, just a pile of cards. On your turn, you flip over cards one by one, until you get two duck cards from the same "family" or a Bruce (dog). When the game is over, the one with the most points wins.



The game has some good learning points - children get to take a chance in a low-key and fun way. Cooperation is great since it is easy to cheer on your opponent as he flips his cards. And point counting requires sorting and choosing the highest card in each group - good skills for the preschool set.



But most important, it is quick, easy and fun. The threesome (5, 7 and 9) enjoy it, and I think it is fun, too. Rules are not complex, and you don't have to keep referring to them to get through the game. One game takes max 10 minutes, so it is easy to squeeze it in to a spare moment, or play a tournament and enjoy. And of course, the pictures on the cards are charming (as with all Gamewright games).

We don't always get the best images from our suppliers. In the case of our adorable blomsterkrans from Oskar & Ellen, the product is just too new, and they haven't had a chance to set up a photo shoot yet. The only picture we have is of a little girl wearing a prototype, and although she is cute, it is hard to see the real product. So - voila! Instant photo studio.

Of course, I don't really know what I'm doing in Photoshop half the time, but with the web and "how to" postings from others, I can usually get by. And here's the result:

Loppfångare från Djeco

With two flights, three kids, four carry-ons and one parent, I figured our sportlov trip would be a great place to test out some travel toys. I took the Djeco Origami Loppfångare with us, and let the threesome have a go. Annika (age 9) agreed to be a "guest bloggar", for the product, and here are her comments:

"Jag tycker att lopporna är roliga och man kan göra hur många som helst. Jag och min brorsa skrattade mycket med dem. Vi var på planet och vi hade inget att göra så tog min mamma ut dem och så började vi vika lite och så blev det roligt. Och så satt vi massor med konstiga klistermärken. We have several products that have been floating around the warehouse, never making it online. We joke that these are our "osmosis" product - the ones you would never know about unless you could read our minds. We actually were really excited about these products when we ordered them, when they arrived - and we are still excited to have them in our range. But somewhere along the line, they got set aside - other deliveries, other deadlines, sick children - you know how it goes...

But since you probably aren't mind-readers... and since we can't really sell products that our customers don't know about... well, we have finally put these great products online.

Quadrilla kulbana - i lagret igen!

Yep - the Quadrilla kulbana is now back in stock, after a rather long absence. We sold out just before Christmas, and the re-order took a while since the manufacturer was also sold out. But as I was logging everything in, a bit of the financial crisis jumped out... Not only did the manufacturer raise prices, but the Swedish crown has also fallen significantly in relation to the Euro... making Quadrilla quite a bit more expensive - 30-50%. The only benefit - since our order was large, the shipping costs per product went down. We're trying to keep prices reasonable... but sometimes the outside world intrudes...

Even though it costs more, Quadrilla is still a great product, and my favorite of the marble runs from the Toy Fair in Germany. Two years ago, I really researched them, trying to find the best one, and I still haven't found better. It is stable when built, it is cleverly color-coded, and the building possibilities are extensive. We have a ready-built Twist in the warehouse that is glued together. We have taken it to several public fairs (like Underbara Barn) and parents have had to - literally - pry their children away from it.

It isn't for small children, and works best for 5 and above. (We joke that it is a really good dad toy!) My personal favorite is the Twist & Rail, which has both the helix from the Twist set and the Fill-and-Spill from the Rail set.

Äntligen - Veckans Vara

Finally I changed our Veckans Vara - after about three weeks of Whoozit and Tizoo, it was time for something new. This week we have stamp sets from Djeco - wonderful kits with 9-10 stamps each - enjoy!

So now I'm wondering if Veckans Vara is a lot like our fridge...

Let me explain. I'm a bit of a nerd, and I have the shelves in our fridge labeled - cheese, eggs, extra milk, meats, leftovers, etc. I initially did it to make sure the leftovers didn't get lost and end up becoming frightening science experiments. But what I have found is that having a place for everything and organizing according to place actually creates a lot of extra space. It is truly a mystery to me, but somehow, if we put things away properly, we have room for more than we ever imagined. Curious.

So back to my week... To say that my "to-do" list is long is an understatement, and I can confirm Murphy's other law - that "Work expands to fill the time allotted to it." I'm wondering if maybe my work week can become like my fridge, and if I allocate time to specific activities rather than just filling my time as activities arise, the perhaps I will have more time. Wishful thinking, I know, but wishing is not really a bad thing...

My new plan is to change Veckans Vara on Tuesday mornings, between 9 and 9.30. I just hope my week is like my fridge...

Slagträ - It Works!

So on Friday, we had playdate afternoon, and each of the threesome had a friend over to play - total of six kids. So as I hovered around, trying to make sure that nobody got their feelings hurt (the guests, in any case) I was standing in our "anything goes" room with four boys and a few balls.
"Look, mom!" says Benjamin, tossing a (foam) baseball and swinging with his (foam) bat.

Now my son has never really played baseball, but he has a strong swing and excellent follow-through. Since I was standing right behind him, I got the full impact of his follow-through, right in the face!

I am relieved to report that the bat works. Though it didn't feel wonderful and I wouldn't recommend getting hit in the face with a baseball bat, it really didn't hurt all that much, and my face is still the same size, shape and color it was before.

Don't worry - we have ordered more bats and they should be here this week - in plenty of time for warmer weather.

Blokus - Back Again!

We've been waiting for months... and finally we received our delivery of Blokus and Blokus Duo. Blokus, Blokus Duo and Blokus Trigon are all wonderful games - simple to learn, hard to master and challenging to win!
When we were on sportlov with the kids, David (43) and I (also 43) and Annika (9) had a chance to play Blokus Trigon. David doesn't usually play games, but when he does, he plays to win. The first game was won by Annika - much to his disappointment - and the second was a three-way tie. (The only problems with the Blokus games is that they almost have to be played by the right number of people - 4 for Blokus and Trigon, 2 for Duo - in order to force a win-lose situation. Otherwise it is often possible for everyone to play all of their pieces.)

So back to age recommendations - 9 is fine. I think the boys (7 and 5) would have had a hard time with Trigon, but would have been great with the regular Blokus - squares are easier to manage than the triangles!

In... and Out Again

We finally got our shipment of Dig-A-Dino products - these have been very popular - so popular, in fact, that the supplier was sold out before Christmas. On Monday, we got our long awaited delivery. So - in with the dinosaurs... until we noticed that almost all of the boxes had been opened by the supplier (to put an information sticker on the products), and in opening the shipping cartons, the supplier sliced through almost every one of the dino kits. We went through the shipment and managed to salvage 12 undamaged products... out of 72! So one box in and five back to the supplier. Bummers.

It is always a problem with a web store. If people came into the store, saw the product, assessed the damage (because it is really only cosmetic - the product inside the box is fine), and then decided to buy the product anyway... well, that works. But we cannot knowingly send out a damaged product to a customer. So back they go, and we will wait a bit longer for the rest of our dinos.

Veckans Vara...

is delayed again. With sportlov, deliveries, organising the US shipment, kids, family, house, etc... it seems as though our Veckans Vara doesn't get changed that often. It is on my to-do list today, along with a few hundred other things...

A New Supplier!

We are delighted to welcome Wild Republic to our product range! We just got in a huge delivery with lots of fun things - mostly dinosaurs - and now we will be busy putting things online. So what's new?

For starters, we got some fantastic stuffed animals that double as handpuppets. We like handpuppets that aren't JUST puppets. Our current range of Fiesta Crafts puppets have legs and soft bodies, so they could double as dolls. And our new stuffed animal handpuppets are the same. Check out this adorable triceratops - I never thought of triceratops as particularly cuddly, but this one is!

And I will have a hard time keeping my hands off this cute iguana (again, cute not being a word I would normally associate with iguanas...).

And after losing our Safari Limited "Toob" range, we have a new series that is even better! Though Wild Republic doesn't have as broad a range of tubes as we had before, our favorites are back - farm animals, baby animals, space and dinosuars. And even better - the "tubes" are actually plastic bags with a zipper and a handle - perfect for storage and travel!

Now that we are growing, it is useful to have some way to store and display things, even though we don't have a real shop for people to visit. With the new tubes, we got a full display rack - what a deal!

New Delivery (Almost) Underway

We are in the process of organizing the next delivery from the US... but it is so difficult to get everyone coordinated. Everything needs to arrive at our consolidator's at about the same time... but not everyone is equally speedy with shipments. The first time we tried a consolidated shipment, one company (who will remain nameless) was more than three weeks behind everyone else. Of course, we pay for storage while the order waits... and boats come and go... This time, we have things on the way from our old favorites - Adora, Set, Scratch-Art, Gamewright and Mindware - plus some new suppliers that we discovered at the German Toy Fair. Of course, it's all "hurry up and wait" at this point, because the boat won't arrive until the beginning of April...

Website Update

We got a new version of our website yesterday, and today has been full of seeing how the new updates will impact the site and how we can work with it. So far, the differences for us have been huge - almost like they took our wishlist and made all the changes we could have wanted.

The biggest differences for you - the customer - is that we can now list items in more than one place. We have so many products, but some are hard to classify, or could be found in different places. Hopefully, this will let us put the products where you will look for them. Even better, we can now have a better "Nyheter" area. Before the upgrade, we could only feature the 20 most recent new products - but we had more than 100 new products come in during the last week alone, and more are arriving every day. Now we can feature the new ones easily.

Of course, every change comes with a couple of headaches... notably our "top 20" list of bestselling products. Instead of showing the top sellers, it seems to show the products in alphabetical order...

And of course, there are still a few items remaining on our wish list...

Return from the Toy Fair

Sounds like a movie title, doesn't it?

We had a wonderful 2 1/2 days at the Toy Fair in Nürnberg. There was so much to see that I'm sure we missed a lot - but we did manage to line up some exciting products for 2009! We are now placing our orders, and the new products should start rolling in over the next two months.

So what were the highlights at Toy Fair 2009?

The Doll Hall - yep, one hall completely filled with dolls and stuffed animals of every shape and size. Some of the dolls were fascinating - almost museum pieces - but not very play-able. Others were extraordinarily expensive - a pair of life-sized limited edition dolls had a suggested retail price of over 100.000 SEK. Really.

The National Exhibits - Two halls focus on exhibitors from specific countries. These exhibitors tend to be small companies, often there for the first time. The country organisations offer a packaged booth deal, so the exhibits are often not that flashy or colorful, but the products can be real jewels. We found a few treasures here!

Hall 3 - which was full of wooden toys, dress-up costumes, games, etc. We couldn't spend too much time here - there was so much to see!

And what was missing this year?

Bath Gel - yep, the toy that got my vote for the single worst idea of 2007 was notably missing this year. It was an interesting idea - put your kid in the bath, dump in some package of something, and the water turns into colored jello. Non-toxic, of course. Then dump in package number 2, and it turns back into water again. I had visions of losing package number 2, and having to shovel the bath water out the window...

Child-sized Fitness Equipment - the toy that got my vote for the absolute worst product of 2008 was the tiny treadmill. This toy misses the boat in so many ways, I can't even count them. First of all, a treadmill is not a toy, and can in fact be quite dangerous. Encouraging children to play on them has to be a mistake. And second, why would anyone think that it would be a good idea to "teach" a child to go to the gym? My suggestion - open the door.

But somehow, 2009 was missing a truly horrible product. Perhaps that's a good thing!

Anyway, we really enjoyed our time at the Toy Fair (see Karin with a Lego giraffe) and we can't wait to show you the new things that will soon arrive!

Toy Fair - Day 1 1/2

After half a day on Thursday and a whole day on Friday looking at nothing but toys, toys, toys, Karin and I are ready to attack the halls one more time. We have a short list, we have a plan - but mostly we will wander the halls, getting inspiration and ideas. Yesterday, we started the morning at 9am with Hall 3 (of 12) and by the time we finished, lunch had come and gone.

It is hard to plan ahead - our trick seems to be in bypassing the enormous booths and finding the "nuggets" - the tiny booths sandwiched between others, with a fascinating group of products that most pass over. Or in finding a great range of products tucked in among hundreds of others that all look the same. It might be a one-guy booth with a table and a few things stuck on the wall, which on closer inspection turns out to be a truly great idea (we found one of these yesterday!). Or it might be a range within a supplier we already know.

Many of ABC Leksaker's most innovative products have come from past visits to this fair - Quadrilla, Automoblox, Adora, Scratch-Magic- and we hope to bring you many, many more!

Of course, our feet are tired, our shoulders are drooping from the weight of the catalogs we have amassed, and our eyes are somewhat glazed from visual overload. One more day. And then we have a migration planned to Starbucks for a celebratory coffee-and-catalog review.

Toys, Toys, Toys!

We're off to the Toy Fair in Germany on Thursday - 14 halls filled with toys of every description! It is always exciting to see how many toys are out there, and to get a first peek at all the new things. We only get 2 1/2 days to hit all 14 halls (though we might skip model trains and container imports from China), so we will be busy.

We will try to report on the best, worst, most interesting trends, etc, while we are there. And of course, which wonderful toys will make our line-up during 2009!

Helpful Ideas?

People contact me every so often... they want to start a web business and sell toys, too. They would like names of suppliers, information on profitability, how I do the site, etc. I guess there's no harm in asking, but forgive me if I'm not always so helpful. So... I think I will be helpful, but in a different way.

I am an avid internet shopper. I am always looking for ways to make my life easier, and having things "magically" arrive (rather than having to battle crowds, traffic, parking, not to mention dragging three kids in tow) is infinitely tempting. I purchase often from H&M, Lands End (US and UK), Amazon (US and UK), Hanna Andersson, Gap, CD-ON.com, dammsugarpåsar.nu, and many more. But there are so many possibilities out there - espeically in Sweden.

Here is a very short list of what I wish I could find online - actually what I have looked for over the past couple of weeks:

1) Brabantia Garbage Bags - we have three sizes of Brabantia garbage cans in our house, and the company makes wonderful bags that fit just perfectly. The problem is in finding them... and when I make the effort to look, the store is always out of the size I need.

2) Kids Outerwear - Cross is a great company with wonderful products... and so is Didrikssons and Reima... so why doesn't anyone sell them on line (aside from used)? We seem to have a constant need for new outerwear year-round, between growth spurts and general (aka boy) wear and tear.

3) Merrell Footwear (especially for kids) - We love Merrell shoes, but they are really hard to find in Sweden. Here's a great opportunity!

4) American Food Products - this might be tricky, as there may be rules for how to store and ship. I thought Grey's would take care of my need for zip-loc bags and chocolate chips, but their website has never opened.

So - there's a few ideas, and anyone who starts one of the above will be guaranteed a customer! Anyone have any more ideas?

Wacky Track - Finally at ABC Leksaker!

We bought Wacky Track for our Thomas the Train set many, many years ago in the USA, and it is the one piece of track that is consistently part of our track layouts. Children (and grown-ups) can't always make the track layouts come out right - it is hard to get the right amount of turn and length to always ensure a functional track that trains can drive on. Wacky Track is a great solution. It bends and flexes to join up most layouts.

We have tried for a couple of years to source this product, and FINALLY have found it and can make it available to you. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have!

Mjuka Klossar - Still Popular 9 Years Later!

One of the best baby gifts I ever received was a set of foam blocks, given to me by a British friend when Annika was born, more than 9 years ago. These blocks have seen it all. They have been in the bathtub and the sandbox, and some of them have survived winter cold, summer heat and the added indignity of small teeth. Some are a bit faded (the poor ones who survived a few winters in the sandbox) and some do have teeth marks, but they still remain one of the best toys we have ever had. I remember sitting on the floor and building tower after tower with 9-month-olds, only to have my wacky constructions knocked down again and again to the accompaniment of baby giggles. Or building fences for make-belive zoos... our houses for pretend animals...

But I thought we were done. My baby is now 5 1/2, and it seemed like it was time to move the blocks into retirement. But no sooner had I shifted them towards the door had my 7-year-old rediscovered them and brought them back into the mainstream again. So I guess we will have them for a few more years...

I searched for the same blocks to offer in ABC Leksaker, and finally found them. These foam blocks are great additions to any toybox. They are light and don't hurt if thrown. They are quiet and don't make a big crash. But best of all, they are "sticky" and don't slide easily past each other, giving creative construction a whole new dimension! Great - and great fun!

Världskartan - AWESOME!

We gave Christopher (age 5 1/2) the Oskar & Ellen Världskartan for Christmas this year. We started with just the map and the animals. leaving the flags, monuments and people for a later date. The detail on the map is excellent, and the map key (included) is really useful to point out the rivers, mountains and other details.





Now you might not think a map makes a great surprise under the Christmas tree, but Christopher was thrilled. He immediately donated his ski pole to hang it (note: it helps to have an 80cm pole for hanging) and set about putting all the animals in the right place. The map now hangs proudly in his room, and he makes sure all the animals are in the right places, moving a few around (the moose from Sweden to Canada and back again) just to make sure he has everything correct. If an animal falls off or ends up in the ocean, he comes running to check where it should be.





As a parent, I'm thrilled with the quality of the map, and the level of detail will be great from now (age 5) through the early teen years. It actually sparked a family discussion, since Annika (age 9) couldn't name the continents...

Back in the Saddle Again!

We had a wonderful break over Christmas. With all the Christmas rush, it felt really good to just close the warehouse doors, secure in the knowledge that Santa's work was (mostly) done.

And the break also made me appreciate how nice it is to be in Sweden. We're a small company, and we just can't staff the office 24/7, or even 8/5 (8 hours a day, 5 days a week), especially during holidays. For all of you customers who wrote to us during the "mellandagarna" I want to personally thank you for your understanding and patience, especially when it took several days for your e-mails to be answered. Not one of you was angry about our break - on the contrary, you were more than understanding when you realized that we took some holiday days.

But now we're back, revived and rested, ready for 2009! Many of our shelves are empty after the Christmas rush, and we are doing our best to fill them - and bring in lots of new products - as quickly as possible. We have been to Formex, the best "toy fair" in Sweden, and are on our way next week to the big TOY FAIR in Germany. 14 exhibit halls full of toys... I'll bring my running shoes!
